Retired Merchant
Dies After Shock

Thomas F. Howard in Business
Here 40 Years

The death of Thomas F. Howard of 33 Grove Avenue, a retired news-dealer, who was in the business in Westerly for more than 40 years, occurred at 7 o'clock last evening at his home. About three years ago Mr. Howard suffered a shock from which he never fully recovered. Two weeks ago he was stricken again and had gradually failed until the end came last evening.

Thomas F. Howard was the son of Martin and Margaret Rogers Howard, being born in Longford County, Ire- land, June 12, 1852, being aged 73 years. He came to this country when a child and has always made his home in Westerly. When a young man he learned the stone cutting trade in New Haven, Conn., and for several years was employed in the construction of the Capitol at Albany, N.Y.

When he returned from Albany he hired a store of Albert, Carmichael in the building on the south side of the Pawcatuck River Bridge, where the Victory Bakery is now located. He opened a newsstand and conducted it for more than 40 years disposing of the business to Frank Holiday before the World War. During the war he was employed in a government position in Bridgeport, Conn., and upon his return to Westerly retired from active duties. He belonged to Company B of the Connecticut Militia with headquarters in the old Armory Building on Coggswell Street and received an honorable discharge from the service.

Mr. Howard beloged to a number of organizations during his earlier life, and was an active worker in the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Long before his marriage to Ann Riley of this town he composed a very attractive program for that society while he was in Albany, N. Y., and last Thanksgiving a man in Hartford, Conn., who had one of the programs, brought it to Mr. Howard. He was interested in books and was a good writer.

Mr. Howard was well and favorably known here and his pleasing personality gained him many staunch friends.

Besides his wife, Ann Riley Howard, he is survived by a daughter, Catherine, wife of Jeffrey L. Moore, of this town, and two sons, Dr. Joseph F. Howard of Courtland, N. Y., and James M. Howard, who resides at 33 Grove Avenue. Two sons, James and John and a daughter, Annie, are deceased.

The funeral will be held Monday morning at 8:30 o'clock from his late home with High Requiem Mass at the church of the Immaculate Conception on High Street at 9 o'clock. Internment will be made in the new St. Michael's Cemetery.
